From the sea to the market – and an idea that makes a difference

Imagine this: A fisherman brings his catch ashore – fresh from the sea, the fish lands on a simple wooden table. No refrigeration. No security. No protection from spoilage. And yet, the livelihoods of many people depend on it.

This is precisely where our collaboration with the Tanzanian start-up Sunwave Limited comes in. Sunwave recognizes the challenge: small-scale fishermen without access to adequate cooling or ice solutions. Their goal: to maintain quality, reduce losses, and operate sustainably using solar-powered ice machines.

Our team contributes the knowledge gained at university – and together we are developing a system that is not luxuriously overloaded, but practical, affordable, and implementable locally. We don't want a high-tech solution that comes from the outside and cannot be repaired.

Instead: A structure with ice operation, built locally and maintainable there as well, materials selected as locally as possible and with a view to recycling and circular economy.

This means: reusing old plastic, involving local companies, and conducting training so that an idea becomes a sustainable project. Because we don't just want to deliver a box – we want to raise awareness, strengthen communities, and promote the value of food.
